Best Things to Buy in October 2023
As Strategic Shoppers, we are always looking for the best deals on everything we plan on purchasing. One of the largest keys of Strategic Shopping is knowing when to buy.
October is Fire Prevention Month
October is National Fire Prevention Month. It is the perfect time to make sure your home has all of the fire safety features needed.
Do you have smoke detectors?
Do you have carbon monoxide detectors?
What about good batteries?
Make sure your family is safe through basic fire safety.
Get set up with good smoke and carbon monoxide detectors this month.
Don’t forget to check the batteries.
While you are at it, buy some fire extinguishers, or get the ones you l already have recharged.
Put buying smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and good batteries on top of your things to buy in October.
Many local Red Cross offices offer totally free smoke detectors and batteries.
Check with your local Red Cross to see if they are participating.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Don’t forget about Breast Cancer Awareness this month.
October 4th – National Taco Day
Did you even realize there was a National Taco Day?
No, I am not talking about Taco Tuesday.
There is actually a day recognized every October as National Taco Day.
Check with your favorite local Mexican food restaurants to see if they are offering any deals for National Taco Day.
October 22nd – National Nut Day
Did you know National Nut Day was even a thing?
I suggest watching your local grocery stores to see if they will be running a sale on or around October 22nd to celebrate National Nut Day.
Stock up for your holiday cooking.
National Pizza Month
These national celebration days and months tend to get a little confusing at times.
National Pizza Day was celebrated back in February.
October, however, gives us National Pizza Month.
What a wonderful thing to celebrate!
Give me a pizza along with a tossed salad and I am one happy girl!
Air conditioners and Fans
Remember how you were too hot this summer and swore that next year you were going to get an air conditioner?
Well, don’t wait!
October is one of the best months to get a deal on an air conditioner for next year.
Why wait and pay full price for an air conditioner next year when you can get it at a great price now?
Do you sleep with a fan on at night?
Everyone in my family loves to use fans.
Just like air conditioners, fans will be marked down at the end of the warm weather season.
If you know you are going to want an air conditioner and/or fan next year, then watch your stores for sales and buy in October.
Watch for deals on both large and small appliances this month.
Barbecue Grills, Charcoal Grills, and Smokers
My family spends a lot of the spring, summer, and even fall grilling out.
Does your family do a lot of barbecuing?
I love my propane barbecue grill.
My daughter, Jaimie, uses a charcoal grill.
Don’t forget to watch for little camping grills, smokers, bags of charcoal, and more this month.
BBQ grills will be marked down in October.
Camping and Fishing Gear
Do you like to go camping? My children love camping!
Me on the other hand, well let’s just say I love my bed and being close to an actual bathroom.
I do, however, love the camping section in the stores.
Everyone should have some kind of camping gear on hand.
Camping gear makes great prepping items. We live in an area that gets really cold and it’s not uncommon for our power to go out, so I like to head to the camping gear to make sure the stock up on things that could help us out during emergencies.
October is a great month to stock up on camping gear.
Other outdoor things like fishing poles and tackle will also be marked down this month.

Candy Sales
October always equals amazing candy sales and deals. Since October 31st is Halloween, practically every store will be having candy on sale.
The best deals can be found in drugstores, like Walgreens, Rite Aid, and CVS.
By using a combination of sales, manufacturer coupons, store coupons, store rewards, and rebates, you can score some of the best deals.
Don’t forget that all of the Halloween candy that doesn’t sell will be marked up to 90% off in November.
Costumes
I do not celebrate Halloween, but I love costumes.
Over our many, many years of homeschooling, we have incorporated many costumes into different historical studies and plays.
When my children were little, I would create dress-up boxes. These boxes would be filled with all kinds of different costumes and accessories.
Costumes make great Christmas gifts!
Don’t forget that costumes will be at their rock-bottom prices in November.
Lawn and Garden Sales
I love the end-of gardening season sales!
You may or may not find seeds this late in the game, and many plants look a little worse for wear, but there are still many great deals to be found.
Watch for markdowns clearance prices on tomato cages, pots, potting soil, soil amendments, and even large bags of Epsom Salts!
The garden section sells large bags of Epsom Salts as a soil amendment. You will not find clearance Epsom Salts in the regular medicine section of your store. Look for these deals right in the gardening section.
Lawn Mowers, Trimmers, and More
A large part of Strategic Shopping includes knowing when to buy things.
Waiting until you need to buy something usually ends up costing a lot of money.
That is why you should buy a lawnmower in October if you already know you are going to need one in the spring.
You can also get trimmers, blowers, trimmer string, and so much more at rock-bottom prices this month.
Outdoor Furniture
I love to see all of the brand-new, colorful outdoor furniture go on display every spring.
My daughter, Sarah, loves to try out all of the comfy-looking swingsets, couches, and chairs on display in the stores.
I love it too.
I don’t, however, like the price tags that are attached to them!
If you have a place to store your patio furniture for the winter, then make sure you get out there and buy yours in October.
October is one of the best times of year to get a deal on outdoor furniture.
Swimming Pools, Supplies, and Water Toys
Summer is over, so anything that has to do with warm-weather fun, will be marked down to its rock-bottom price this month.
Watch for swimming pools.
Large, medium-sized, and kiddie pools will be priced at unbelievably low prices this month.
Don’t forget to grab all of your pool supplies too.
Pool noodles, squirt guns, floaties, water balloons, and more will be up to 90% off this month.
Stock up for next year!
Toy Clearance
Most people think December is the month to get great deals on toys.
The truth is, you don’t need to wait to get your Christmas shopping done.
Don’t wait until December to start buying toys.
October is filled with all kinds of toy clearance sales.
Make a Christmas plan.
Write out your Christmas list.
Figure out exactly who you are buying for, then head out to those October toy clearance sales.
