Dehydrated Marshmallows – How and Why

My family loves dehydrated marshmallows and they are so easy to make.

Mini Marshmallows

I have found that mini marshmallows work best for dehydrating.

It’s always nice to find a good clearance sale!

Dehydrated Marshmallows – How and Why

Put Them onto the Dehydrator Trays

Simply open up the bags and pour the mini marshmallows onto the dehydrator trays.

It’s that simple.

I don’t worry about whether or not they are in a single row, or if they are touching each other or not.

Put Them into the Dehydrator

Load up the trays and start up the dehydrator.

I keep the setting low.

I am not sure how long it will take for your marshmallows to dehydrate.

There are too many variables, like the humidity in your home, the type of dehydrator you have, and more.

It does take a while though.

I usually run mine for 18 to 24 hours.

A few things to note concerning dehydrating marshmallows:

  • Marshmallows don’t shrink like other foods that are dehydrated. They will actually puff up a little.
  • You can’t tell if marshmallows are fully dehydrated until you turn off the dehydrator and let them cool down. Once cooled, see if they are hard and crunchy.

Store the Dehydrated Marshmallows in an Air Tight Container

Store the dehydrated marshmallows in an air-tight container.

Most of the time you will find a half-gallon canning jar sitting on my pantry shelf filled with dehydrated marshmallows.

I also use Food Saver bags and Mylar bags to store them if I have a lot.

Why Make Dehydrated Marshmallows

So many people look at me funny when I tell them I dehydrate marshmallows.

Why on earth would you dehydrate marshmallows?

I always answer this question with a question myself.

Have you ever heard of Lucky Charms or hot chocolate with marshmallows?

That’s not all we do with dehydrated marshmallows though.

Both my kids and grand love to eat them straight out of the jar. It’s like candy to them.

I use them in baking fudge, Rice Krispie Treats, and popcorn balls.

You can substitute dehydrated marshmallows in any recipe that calls for fresh marshmallows or marshmallow fluff.
