Home School in the Woods a TOS Crew Review

Sarah and I were given the opportunity to use and review the Home School in the Woods Time Travelers: The Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression United States history unit study.

My family has always enjoyed and learned so much more from hands-on curriculum. Combining seeing, hearing, and touching seems to really lock in the learning process.

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”

― Benjamin Franklin

Home School in the Woods uses multiple ways to get your students involved in the actual learning.

They offer family-friendly, flexible curriculum that works well with homeschooling families, whether that includes one student or an entire classroom of students.

Time Travelers: The Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression contains twenty-five lessons. The creators of this program suggest taking anywhere between five to ten weeks to complete the entire course. At this rate, this particular lesson plan would cover 1/3 of a typical school year.

Seventy years of American history is covered. It begins in the year 1860 and goes all the way to 1939.

Here are some of the topics covered within this course:

Thankfully, all of their material is reproducible within a family, which can save mega families, like mine a ton of money.

This curriculum comes as a digital download that can be saved onto your computer and/or printed out.

Actually, Home School in the Woods is excited to announce the fact that they have gone entirely digital with their products.

Home School in the Woods Time Travelers: The Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression is aimed at students in grades 3-8, but could easily be used as a supplemental highschool program.

Introduction

Introduction to help get you started

You are not left on your own to figured things out once you have purchased the Home School in the Woods.

The introduction pages lay a foundation for what will be taught throughout these lessons. It also includes teacher helps and tips to consider before starting.

Lessons

Lessons

I am a lover of quotes. I have used famous quotes as copywork in our family’s homeschool from the very beginning.

We began homeschooling in 1993!

Famous quotes for copywork

I was thrilled to see that this curriculum uses famous quotes as copywork to encourage both the memorization of good quotes and to teach and practice cursive writing.

Yes, this school still teaches cursive writing!

Timelines

Lessons also include the hands-on creating of timelines. These work great when made into timeline notebooks.

Depression-Era Dinner

Projects

One of our favorite parts about this curriculum is definitely the hands-on projects. We enjoyed gathering up some of the family and making Hobo stew. This stew was also known as Depression-Era Dinner, Camp Stew, and Mulligan’s Stew. We simply called it, Stone Soup.

Depression-Era Dinner

Some other fun Depression-Era meal projects include Chipped Beef on Toast, Buttered Noodles with Cracker Crumble, Corned Beef Hash, Chocolate and Rice Pudding, and Depression Cake.

Some other projects include lapbooks, file folder games, notebook timelines, experiments, and more.

Teacher’s Key

This curriculum includes a teacher’s key. For those of us who started homeschooling back in the day, we know what a valuable resource having a teacher’s key actually included with the program can be!

I actually remember when publishers didn’t want to sell teacher’s guides to the common folk at all!

Foote Family Homeschool

The Home School in the Woods – The Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression is an amazing program that can be used as a stand-alone curriculum, or as supplemental lessons and projects.

This type of curriculum is exactly what our family likes, so we give it a big thumb’s up!
