Homeschool Days at the Orebed Sugar Shack

Homeschool Days at the Orebed Sugar Shack

There are five seasons in the North Country.

  • spring
  • summer
  • fall
  • winter
  • Sugaring Season

Driving down the road and seeing the steam and smoke rise from a sugar shack is an iconic view around here.

My 12 homeschooled children grew up gathering their own sap and boiling it down to syrup on our old-fashioned cookstove.

Do you know how to turn sap into an edible product?

  • What kind of trees are tapped to make maple syrup?
  • Are all maple trees the same?
  • How do you collect the sap?
  • How is the sap changed into delicious maple syrup?

Learn the answers to these questions and more at the Orebed Sugar Shack Homeschool Days!

Meet the Owners of the Orebed Sugar Shack

Jeff and Lori Jenness operate the Orebed Sugar Shack just outside of Dekalb Junction, NY, on the Orebed Road.

They are fourth-generation maple producers.

It is not a surprise that they invite homeschooling families in for a tour because the Jenness family is extremely focused on both education and family.

Family is the foundation of their business.

On your visit, you will see many of their family members on the premises to help you enjoy every moment.

It is common to see both Lori and Jeff, their children, their grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, siblings, and even Lori’s mother.

Homeschool Days

Jeff and Lori Jenness are inviting homeschooling families to take a guided tour of their sugar shack.

Please make sure your students come dressed appropriately because this tour includes a lot of time outside.

Students will get a guided tour and a first-hand look at the Orebed sugaring system.

The Jenness family shows both the old-fashioned way to boil sap, as well as their modern-day system.

Each visitor will receive a free tasty sample, plus have the chance to buy maple products.
