How I Shop Strategically and Save Big on Groceries
People often ask me, “How much money do you spend on groceries each week?”
The truth is — that question doesn’t have a simple answer! I don’t shop week-to-week the way most people do. I shop strategically.
Of course, some things I buy are meant for that week’s meals — produce, dairy, or fresh bread — but the bulk of my shopping isn’t about this week. It’s about months (and sometimes even a year or more) down the road.
When I find a great deal on staple items, I don’t just buy one or two. I stock up — and that’s where the savings really add up! My pantry and freezer are my biggest tools for stretching our grocery budget and ensuring that I always have ingredients on hand to make wholesome meals for my family.
I plan my shopping trips around sales, seasonal produce, and bulk-buy opportunities. I also rotate my pantry, keeping an eye on expiration dates and making sure nothing goes to waste. It’s a system that works beautifully once you get into the rhythm.
🦃 November is one of the best times of year to stock up!
Baking supplies, butter, and of course — turkeys — are at their lowest prices of the year. I take full advantage of those holiday sales. I have a big freezer, so I’m able to buy enough turkeys to last me an entire year! And yes — turkey stays good in the freezer for over a year when it’s wrapped properly. That means I can enjoy hearty turkey meals all year long without paying full price in the off-season.
Strategic shopping isn’t just about saving money — it’s about peace of mind. It means I’m not running to the store every few days, spending extra on impulse buys or last-minute items. Instead, I have the freedom to plan meals based on what I already have and spend my time where it matters most — with my family.
If you’ve never tried this approach, start small! Buy an extra one or two of the items you use most often when they’re on sale. Over time, you’ll build a stocked pantry that makes meal planning easier, saves you money, and gives you that comforting feeling of being prepared for whatever comes.
