Easy Homemade Slush Puppies Recipe
Homemade slush puppies are an easy, budget-friendly way to cool off on a hot day. You can make them with juice, Kool-Aid, soda, or punch using ingredients you may already have at home.
Below I’ll show you a simple homemade method, plus an even easier way to make slushies when you want them fast.
What You’ll Need to Make Homemade Slush Puppies
To make homemade slush puppies, you’ll need your favorite drink—juice, Kool-Aid, soda, punch, or another flavored beverage—plus a shallow freezer-safe pan or stainless-steel bowl and a spoon for stirring.
Plan on a few hours of freezing time. A shallow container works especially well because the mixture freezes faster and is easier to stir into that classic slushy texture.
1. Choose Your Slush Puppy Flavor
Step one is simply picking the flavor and the product I am going to use to make the slush puppies.
My children and grands have always enjoyed soda, Hawaiian Punch, Kool-Aid, etc.
The choices are really endless.
Sometimes I just use water, sugar, and vanilla extract. That’s it!
*Sometimes I mix the flavors.
2. Pour Into a Shallow Container
Pour your chosen drink into a shallow freezer-safe pan or stainless-steel bowl. Don’t fill it too deeply—the thinner the layer, the faster and more evenly it will freeze.
3. Freeze and Stir
Place the container in the freezer. After about 30–45 minutes, check it and use a spoon or fork to scrape and stir the ice crystals that are beginning to form around the edges. Return it to the freezer and repeat every 30 minutes until the mixture reaches a soft, slushy consistency.
4. Keep Stirring Until Slushy
Continue checking the mixture every 30–45 minutes. Scrape and stir the frozen edges back into the center each time. This keeps the drink from freezing into one solid block and creates the soft, icy texture you want.
5. Serve and Enjoy
Once the mixture has a soft, icy slush texture, scoop it into cups or bowls and serve right away. Add a straw or spoon and enjoy!
