Courses We are Using in Our Homeschool this Year
Here are some of the courses from SchoolhouseTeachers that we are using in our family’s homeschool this year.
Daily Grammar
SchoolhouseTeachers provides weekly printable worksheets that reinforce grammar skills by dissecting sentences, studying each part, and diagramming the sentences.
Into the Elements
Sarah was really excited about this course because she and my grandson, Gabriel, were able to do the class together.
The class is taught through video instruction.
The cool part is you can share the link with someone else and watch the video together.
Sarah can stay home and Gabriel can be at his house, yet they can both watch the video and communicate with each other at the same time through Zoom-type meetings.
Technology is amazing!
This course contains four-sessions that teach how to:
- Use the elements of a story to keep an audience interested in a lecture
- Keep the reader interested on every page of a novel
- Use the techniques for creating the beginning, middle, and end of a story
- Plot the story-arc before ever writing a word of a novel
- Understand how “The Story Question” is the heart of every story
- Create stories that are exciting, provocative, and meaningful
Earth Science
Earth Science is taught through video lessons with worksheets and tests to be completed at the end of each lesson.
Drive-Thru History
This adventure-packed history course is one of my family’s favorites.
Back in the day, I had to buy every lesson on a separate VHS tape!
These videos are full of twists and turns through twelve forty-five minute episodes.
The SchoolhouseTeachers team has created a special set of worksheets available for members only to help reinforce what your students are learning in this course.
Life of Abraham Lincoln
This isn’t just a little lesson on Abraham Lincoln. It is a full course on the Life of Abraham Lincoln.
Through engaging text and numerous photographs, many taken by the course author herself, this course seeks to bring to life the history of Abraham Lincoln and challenge students to look at his life through critical-thinking questions.
Sarah had fun going outside with a tape measure and marking off the size of Abraham Lincoln’s first log cabin home.
Trek Through the Holy Land
I really enjoy these fun and educational videos of a young man’s journey through the Holy Land, India, Peru, Zambia, and more.
There are printable worksheets available to help your students reinforce the material covered in the videos.
All About Maps
All About Maps is an excellent geography program available with your subscription to SchoolhouseTeachers.
Elementary Spanish
Sarah is walking around speaking Spanish all of the time now!
These video lessons make learning a foreign language quick and easy!
American Sign Language
All of my children have always loved to study ASL, so we were really excited to see it included in SchoolhouseTeachers long list of available curriculum.
All About Art
There are six weekly lessons in the All About Art basic art course.
Lessons cover introduce techniques in color, still life, abstracts, landscapes, and self-portraits.
Guitar Lessons
All of my children are musical. We had so much fun over the summer watching some of them perform in talent contests.
We are going to have to build a trophy shelf now!
Are your children musically inclined?
There are a lot of music lessons available on SchoolhouseTeachers.
Sarah chose to learn more guitar this year.
The Study of Nutrition
Students learn the basics of nutrition and how small changes can help them be healthier and more fit as time goes on.
This course encourages your entire family to make the necessary changes to get healthy together.
How to Start Homeschooling in New York
SchoolhouseTeachers has resources to help you learn the laws and get you all set up in your homeschool.

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
She’s not a blogger or a curriculum writer, and there’s no chance you’ve heard her speak at a homeschool convention, but Charlotte Mason remains ever the influencer, even though her life was lived a century ago.
Why? Her enduring educational philosophies resonate with homeschoolers. You may be familiar with her name. You may even be implementing her ideas without realizing it.
Charlotte Mason is often associated with the term “living books” and the phrase “laying down the rails” regarding habit formation. She’s also well known for her ideas on nature study and narration—concepts that make homeschool life an exceptional choice. We would probably all be following Charlotte Mason on social media were she here today. How wonderful to know that she herself followed God! Perhaps that’s why her influence is enduring.
Your influence is enduring, too, Mama! The time and love you pour into your children as you teach them daily is beyond value. There is no one better than you for the job. Your children are home where they belong, learning from you as you keep them on the rails.
More on Charlotte Mason homeschooling is waiting for you inside the pages of the Winter edition of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine.
Other topics you’re sure to love in this coming issue: trains and transportation, workbooks vs. living books, learning through literature, raising a reader, babies and preschoolers, classical education, music, art, and more.
You’ll find a resource guide on foreign language learning and another resource guide on literature and curriculum.
Just like every issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine®, this one is a keeper! Open it up to invest in your own education on all things homeschool and save it for future reference and encouragement.
While The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine hasn’t been around quite as long as the name of Charlotte Mason, we are grateful to be celebrating twenty years of supporting homeschooling families!
