Happy Thanksgiving

Next week is Thanksgiving Day here in the United States, and everyone wants to know which store has the lowest price on turkeys.

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Americans!

I love Thanksgiving time. It is a time to stop and remember how blessed we truly are.

Thanksgiving time also equals super good turkey prices! Everyone is looking to see which stores are offering the lowest price on turkeys this time of year.

You won’t find meat prices as low as thirty or forty cents per pound any other time of year.

These are definitely stock-up prices!

You don’t have to buy the biggest turkey in the store, like I do.

You can pick up a ten-pound turkey for $5.00 or $6.00 right now. Sometimes, we find it even cheaper than that!

Even a dollar per pound for meat is simply amazing!

I always stock my freezer to the brim with turkeys this time of year.

Cooking Turkeys is Easy

It isn’t unusual for me to serve a turkey dinner every month throughout the winter months. I enjoy having a nice turkey dinner during the summer months.

Sometimes, I cook up a turkey just to use for cold-meat sandwiches. The smaller turkeys, or even just the turkey breast works perfectly for sandwiches.

Turkey makes a great choice to take to a bring-a-dish-to-pass event too. Actually, everyone will love you if you do!

A turkey dinner would make a great dish to take to a neighbor, friend, or family member who is grieving. (Yes, we still take food to people when a loved one has passed away.)

It is such a simple meal to cook. I find it even easier than making spaghetti sauce.

Spaghetti sauce requires me to stand right there stirring and making sure it doesn’t burn.

A turkey, however, just gets thrown into the oven, then I go about my day. When I go back into the kitchen, the turkey is just about done.

Multiple Meals from One Turkey

Turkeys are so easy to stretch into multiple meals.

#1 – turkey dinner with side dishes, like salad, potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce

#2 – left-overs – We are usually excited enough to just eat the exact same thing again! Seriously, the left-over turkey dinner is the BEST part!

#3 –cold turkey sandwiches made on homemade bread or rolls

#4 – hot turkey sandwiches with homemade fries (Adding in something new, like homemade fries, makes it feel like you aren’t even eating left-overs.)

#4 – turkey soup

#5 – turkey stew (Just thicken the soup) with homemade biscuits

Using Up the Meat and the Bones

I strip all of the meat off from the turkey on either the first or second day. It gets bagged up and put it into the freezer for subsequent meals.

(If I don’t do this within the first day or two, then the entire carcass, meat and all, tends to get forgotten and thrown into the trash.)

Don’t forget to save the bones! All of my turkey bones get bagged up and thrown into the freezer too.

As time allows, I pull out the meat for sandwiches or to add to soups and stews.

I take the bones out and boil them down into a lovely and extremely healthy bone-broth.

I use my pressure canner to can up bone-broth and ready-to-eat soups. This is a great way to have a Well-Stocked Pantry.

After it is all said and done, I have more meals from one 49 cents a pound turkey than I can count!
