ARTistic Pursuits
a Homeschool Crew Review
Thank you, ARTistic Pursuits and Homeschool Review Crew for giving us an opportunity to do a review on Drawing with Water-soluble and Graded Graphite Pencils, Art Core 5.
Christina is a self-taught artist, but she jumped at the opportunity to do a review on ARTistic Pursuits.
Graphite Pencils and Lines
I was captivated as I watched the DVD lesson on graphite pencils and lines with Christina.
I had no idea that how the pencil was sharpened and how dark or light lines were drawn mattered.
I was amazed to see that darker lines were brought to the front of a picture to a viewer while lighter lines naturally receded to the background.
Understanding the Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds is where the artist divides their drawing into thirds using two horizontal and two vertical lines.
This grid makes nine boxes.
The most important parts of the drawing should be placed at these intersections to produce the most natural image.
The Aggregate Shape
A shape of a group of objects is called an aggregate shape.
It’s a container for the entire drawing.
A drawing should be started with a large aggregate shape that contains all the objects that will be drawn.
If the aggregate shape is right, then the rest of the drawing will go right.
Texture Marks
Christina learned to build the larger shapes in the design first, then add texture marks afterward.
Texture brings out the dimensions of the artwork.
She learned that adding water to graphite drawings is one way to create texture marks.
Value Scales
Value scales are simply the lightness and darkness of things.
There are more values in the world than any artist can draw, so you should simplify what you are looking at and drawing.
Form
Light and shadows must be used in order to get the ultimate form in art.
Facial Form
In order to really capture a person’s facial form perfectly, questions must be asked before attempting to draw.
- What did I notice about this person right off the bat?
- What was captivating about their eyes?
- Did their nose or chin look unique?
Figure Forms and Still Life Forms
Drawing with Water-soluble and Graded Graphite Pencils, Art Core 5. finishes up this course by teaching the artist how to draw figure forms to capture that in-motion look.
Finally, the student is taught how to draw still life forms.
