How I Email Companies to Get Coupons for What My Family Actually Uses
People often ask me how I save so much money on groceries and household items for my mega family. One of my favorite strategies costs absolutely nothing, takes just a few minutes, and has paid off in a big way over the years: I email companies directly and ask for coupons.
Yep. That’s it. No apps. No clipping marathons. Just a simple email.
My Best Coupon Tip (That Costs You Nothing)
If you want some seriously good coupons, skip the hassle and go straight to the source.
I email companies and politely ask if they would be willing to send me coupons for their products. You’d be surprised how often this works.
Here’s a simple message I use:
“My mega family, which includes 12 children, loves (or would like to try) your products. Could you possibly mail me some coupons? Thank you for your time.”
Before you panic — you do NOT need to have 12 children for this to work. 😉 The key is being polite, genuine, and specific.
What Happens When You Ask?
You’ll usually get one of three responses:
- Some companies will turn you down flat
- Some will say they offer coupons, but they’ve reached their limit
- Others will happily mail coupons right to you
And when they say yes? The coupons are often high-value coupons — not the tiny ones you see in the Sunday paper.
Things I’ve Received for Free (Just by Asking)
Over the years, this simple habit has gotten me:
- Gallons of milk
- Pounds of dip
- Bags of potato chips
- Bars of soap
- Bottles of shampoo
One company even told me they didn’t offer coupons… and then surprised me by mailing a box filled with marshmallows!
Jiffy did the same thing. No coupons — but they sent me half a dozen boxes of different mixes instead. I’ll take it! 🙌
When Coupons Pay You to Shop
Yes, you read that right. I’ve actually been paid to shop using coupons companies mailed to me.
One of my all-time favorite examples came from Earthbound Farm Organics.
They mailed me:
- Four $1.00 off any size coupons
- Four $5.00 off any size coupons
Those words any size are key. That means you can buy any item — even trial-size — unless otherwise specified.
At the time, my local Walmart sold Earthbound Farm Organic mini carrots (1‑lb bags) for $1.77 each.
I used four $5.00 off coupons on four bags.
- Total cost: $7.08
- Coupon value: $20.00
Because Walmart pays overage, I was paid $12.92 to take home four pounds of carrots.
That money could be used for more groceries, socks, a car battery… or you can simply take the cash.
Where to Find Companies to Email
I am including some companies and their links below to make it easier for you to get started.
I’ve already done the work for you — the links take you directly to company contact forms, so the whole process takes just a couple of minutes.
You can also start right at home:
- Check your pantry and freezer
- Write down the brand-name products you already buy
- Email those companies first
That way, you’re getting coupons for items your family actually uses.
Match Coupons to Your Local Stores
Another smart step is to check your local store (or their weekly flyers) to see which brands they carry.
That way, when coupons start showing up in your mailbox, you already know exactly where to use them.
A great app to get all of your favorite store’s flyers right in one spot is Flipp.
Yes, This Works Beyond Groceries
I even tested this idea outside of food.
I emailed Holiday Inn and simply said:
“My husband and I have twelve children, and we are thinking that a night away sounds pretty good! Do you offer coupons?”
Their response?
“We do not offer coupons, but please accept this $25.00 gift certificate. From our sympathetic staff.”
I still smile every time I think about that one. 💙
