7 Kitchen Shortcuts That Make Busy Fall Days Easier — autumn kitchen with meal-prep containers, cooking utensils, a pumpkin, and colorful fall leaves.

Fall is one of my favorite times of year, but it can also be a busy one. School, activities, appointments, work, and everything else can make dinner feel like one more thing on a very long list.

The good news is that cooking does not have to be complicated to be good.

A few simple kitchen shortcuts can save time, reduce cleanup, and help you make better use of the food and tools you already have.

Here are seven that I use and recommend.

1. Chop Extra While You Are Already Chopping

If you are cutting onions, peppers, carrots, or other vegetables for tonight’s dinner, prepare a little extra.

Put the extra in the refrigerator and you have part of another meal ready to go.

It takes very little additional effort when your cutting board is already out, but it can save time later.

2. Cook Extra Protein

When you are cooking chicken, ground beef, sausage, or another protein, consider making enough for another meal.

Leftover chicken can become soup, sandwiches, quesadillas, casseroles, or a salad. Extra taco meat can be used for nachos or a taco salad.

You are doing the work once and getting more than one meal from it.

That is a great way to save both time and money.

3. Choose One-Pan Meals

When life is busy, fewer dishes can make a big difference.

Look for meals that can be prepared in one skillet, on one sheet pan, or in one baking dish. You can often cook your protein and vegetables together instead of preparing several separate dishes.

Less cleanup means more time for everything else you need to do.

4. Keep Your Most-Used Tools Within Reach

If you use the same kitchen tools over and over, make them easy to grab.

There is no reason to dig through a cabinet every time you need your favorite measuring tool, food chopper, scraper, or cookware.

A kitchen works better when the things you use most are convenient.

Sometimes a little organization is all it takes to make cooking feel easier.

5. Use Tools That Actually Save You Time

I am a big believer in having kitchen tools that earn their space.

The right chopper can make ingredient preparation faster. Good cookware can make cooking more convenient. Helpful prep and baking tools can take some of the work out of tasks you do regularly.

That is one of the things I appreciate about Pampered Chef. I am not looking for more things to put in my kitchen. I am looking for tools that make the things I already do easier.

You do not need every gadget. Choose the ones that solve a problem you actually have.

6. Make Your Oven Work Harder

If you are already heating the oven, see what else you can prepare at the same time.

Roast extra vegetables. Bake potatoes for another meal. Make muffins or another breakfast item while dinner is cooking.

You can also prepare a meal ahead of time so it is ready to go into the oven when you need it.

Making one cooking session do more work can save both time and energy.

7. Keep a Few Easy Meals in Your Back Pocket

Some days simply do not go according to plan.

That is why I like having a few meals I can make without much thought. Soup and sandwiches, eggs and toast, pasta, baked potatoes, leftovers, or another family favorite can save the day.

Not every dinner needs to be elaborate.

Sometimes the best meal is the one that gets everyone fed without making an already busy day even harder.

Make Your Kitchen Work for You

The goal is not to spend more time in the kitchen.

It is to make the time you already spend there work harder.

Prepare a little extra. Cook once and use it twice. Choose meals that create less cleanup. Keep your favorite tools handy. And use kitchen tools that genuinely make your everyday tasks easier.

Those little changes can add up to more time, less stress, and less waste.

And that is something I can always use more of.
