October is one of those months when I start paying a little more attention to what’s happening in the stores.

Summer is behind us. Fall is here. Halloween is coming. And retailers are already thinking about Christmas.

That change of seasons can create some really good shopping opportunities.

But you know me—I don’t believe something is a bargain just because a store puts a big SALE sign on it.

As Strategic Shoppers, we’re looking for the things we actually need, the things we can buy ahead, and the things that make sense at the price we’re paying.

So let’s take a look at what I would be watching for this October.

1. Outdoor and Garden Clearance

This is one of the first places I’d look.

As the weather gets colder, stores need to make room for other merchandise, which can mean markdowns on outdoor furniture, gardening supplies, planters, tools, coolers, and other seasonal items.

Think about what you used this year.

Did you need another outdoor chair?

Could you use a better cooler?

Were you wishing you had another garden tool?

Make a list now.

Then watch the prices.

If you know you’ll use something next year and you find it at a price you’re happy with, October can be a great time to buy it.

Just make sure you have somewhere to put it.

A bargain isn’t much of a bargain if it takes over your garage!

2. Lawn Equipment

If your mower, trimmer, blower, or other outdoor equipment is getting tired, October is a good time to start looking.

You don’t want to wait until spring when you suddenly need a replacement.

That’s when you’re much more likely to buy whatever is available because you need it right now.

Instead, shop while you have time to compare prices.

If you find the right equipment at the right price, you can put it away and be ready for spring.

I’d much rather shop for a mower when I don’t need one than shop for one when the grass is already growing!

3. Halloween—But Know When to Buy

If you need a costume, decorations, or candy for Halloween this year, October is the obvious time to shop.

But there are actually two different shopping opportunities here.

For this year’s Halloween, watch prices as October gets closer. Candy can become more competitive as Halloween approaches.

For next year’s Halloween, wait until after October 31.

That’s when leftover costumes, decorations, party supplies, and other seasonal merchandise can move into clearance.

If you have room to store things, this can be a great way to save for next year.

Just put a reminder on your calendar so you remember where you put everything!

4. Camping and Outdoor Gear

Camping season may be winding down, which makes October worth checking for end-of-season deals.

Tents, sleeping bags, coolers, lanterns, camp cooking supplies, and other gear can last for years.

And some of those things are useful beyond camping, too.

If you’ve been meaning to replace something, start watching the prices.

But don’t buy something just because the price has been slashed.

Buy it because you know you’ll use it.

That’s the difference between shopping a sale and Strategic Shopping.

5. Fall Clothing and Cold-Weather Basics

October is when the weather starts making us realize what we don’t have.

Before you shop, check what you already own.

Do the kids still have gloves that fit?

Are last year’s boots still wearable?

Does everyone have a jacket?

Do you actually need another sweater?

October can be a good time to shop for fall clothing and warmer basics because retailers are actively promoting fall merchandise, while some categories begin seeing discounts. Jeans are also specifically identified as an October shopping opportunity.

But I wouldn’t buy a winter coat just because it’s on sale if you don’t need one.

Need first. Sale second.

That’s always my rule.

6. Watch the Big October Sales

This is a new one I definitely want on our October shopping radar for 2026.

Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days are October 6–7, and other major retailers are running competing early-holiday promotions around the same time.

You may see deals on things like:

  • Small kitchen appliances
  • Household essentials
  • Toys and games
  • Giftable items
  • Home goods
  • Electronics
  • Holiday items

But here’s where I want you to be careful.

Don’t make a shopping list just because a sale is coming.

Make your list first.

Then see whether the sale gives you a price worth paying.

A deal isn’t a deal if it wasn’t something you needed in the first place. Current shopping guidance also recommends comparing prices rather than assuming an advertised discount is automatically the best price.

7. Start Your Holiday Gift Shopping

Okay, I know.

It’s October.

But Christmas is coming whether we’re ready or not!

October is a good time to start watching prices on the people already on your gift list. Early holiday sales have made October an increasingly important month for gift shopping.

I’m not saying you need to finish Christmas shopping this month.

I’m saying that when you find a genuinely good price on something you already planned to buy, you can grab it and cross that person off your list.

That’s one less thing to worry about later.

And if you have a gift closet, October is a great time to start filling it with useful gifts, games, books, teacher gifts, hostess gifts, and those little things you always seem to need at the last minute.

8. Pantry and Baking Staples

October is also when I start thinking about holiday cooking and baking.

But before you stock up, shop your pantry first.

How many times have we bought something because we thought we were out, only to find another package hiding behind something else?

Take inventory.

Then make your list.

If you know you’ll use things like flour, sugar, spices, canned goods, or other long-lasting staples over the coming months, watch the prices and buy when they make sense for your budget.

You don’t need to fill your pantry just because the holidays are coming.

You just need to be prepared.

What I Wouldn’t Buy Just Because It’s on Sale

Here’s where I think we sometimes get ourselves into trouble.

We see:

50% OFF!

And our brain immediately says, “Look how much I’m saving!”

But if you weren’t planning to buy it, you’re not saving money.

You’re spending money.

I’d rather spend $10 on something my family actually needs than spend $5 on something we don’t need just because it was marked down.

That’s Strategic Shopping.

My October Shopping Strategy

Before you head out shopping this month, take a few minutes and make three lists:

Need Now

Need Later

Buy If the Price Is Right

Then give yourself a budget.

When you find something on your list at a price you’re happy with, buy it.

When you find something that’s not on your list, stop and think before putting it in your cart.

October gives us some good opportunities to shop smarter—especially with seasonal clearance, fall necessities, Halloween timing, and the early holiday sales.

But we don’t have to buy everything.

We don’t have to chase every sale.

And we certainly don’t have to spend money just because a retailer tells us we’re getting a deal.

We can decide what our family needs, watch the prices, and buy at the right time.

That’s Strategic Shopping.

And when we do that, we can put more in our cart, more in our wallet, and more for our family.

Ready to make your shopping dollars work harder?

October is a great month to start shopping with a plan instead of simply shopping because something is marked “on sale.”

That’s exactly what Strategic Shopping is all about—knowing what to buy, when to buy it, and how to make your budget stretch further.
