CHRISTIAN HEROES: THEN & NOW Betty Greene: Wings to Serve

Betty Greene – Wings to Serve – YWAM Publishers – TOS Crew Review

I would like to thank the Homeschool Review Crew and  YWAM Publishing  for giving my family the opportunity to review Betty Greene: Wings to Serve.

CHRISTIAN HEROES: THEN & NOW Betty Greene: Wings to Serve

Betty Greene slipped into the cockpit of a twin-engine Lockheed B-34 bomber and greeted the officer already seated in the copilot’s seat.

This was Betty’s first time flying a B-34.

The officer was going along on the ride for Betty’s first flight check.

As the officer watched Betty go through the pre-flight procedure, he realized that she definitely knew what she was doing, so he, much to Betty’s dismay, promptly decided to take a nap!

He did just that! He pushed back his seat, curled up, and went to sleep.

Betty wasn’t on any normal first flight check though.

The military needed planes to pull a canvas behind the plane with a large target painted onto it.

She flew 2,000 feet straight up, then leveled off and flew right over antiaircraft gunnery practice soldiers.

Suddenly, explosions started going off extremely close to the aircraft!

It didn’t take long for the officer to forget about his nap, grab the radio, and let those soldiers know to stop shooting at the plane and only shoot at the target!

Betty passed her first flight test.

She smiled as she realized her childhood dreams were coming true.

Betty was one step closer to becoming not only a Women Airforce Service Pilot but also a missionary pilot.

Attention Grabbing True Stories

Are you looking for some attention-grabbing true stories for your homeschool?

This was chapter one of Betty Greene – Wings to Serve.

It was definitely an attention-grabbing book.

I didn’t have any trouble keeping my children involved in family read-aloud time during this book.

Betty Greene

Betty Greene was born in 1920 and died in 1997.

She grew up in Seattle, Washington with two dreams in her heart:

  1. to love and do the work of God
  2. to fly airplanes

Betty’s dreams started to come to reality when she started flying for the Mission Aviation Fellowship.

This book is filled to the brim with all of this brave woman’s adventures in flying and ministry.

Read-Aloud

This chapter book works perfectly as a read-aloud.

My family gathered into the living room and listened to Mom read each day.

Read-alouds are one of my all-time favorite parts of homeschooling.

I have always loved gathering my children all around me and enjoying a good book together.

Some of my adult children and grandchildren joined us for this read-aloud.

Do you do read-alouds in your homeschool?

Even if you don’t homeschool, do you enjoy reading aloud with your children?

Unit Study

If you prefer, you can use this book as a unit study.

A full unit study is available as a download on the website.

As a homeschooling mama of many, I love the fact that the unit studies have reproducible pages.

That means you only need to buy one for your entire homeschool.

They give you permission to copy pages for each one of your homeschool students.

The unit studies can be used for individual study time, or in a group setting.

Unit Studies Cover a Variety of Subjects

Unit Studies Cover a Variety of Subjects

Unit Studies were created to cover a variety of subjects under one topic.

This Unit Study covers the following subjects:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Social Studies
  • Bible Memory
  • Vocabulary
  • Essay Writing
  • Creative Writing
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Public Speaking
  • Drama
  • Art

Another nice thing about Unit Studies is they are created for varying age groups.

Perhaps your younger students are not quite ready for essay writing, public speaking, and drama, but they can work on creative writing, Bible memory, and art.

The Unit Study is able to be designed by the parent/teacher to fit each student’s level and needs.

Unit Study Question Format

There are four basic questions in the Unit Study that coincide with the book.

These four questions cover:

  • a vocabulary question
  • a factual question
  • a reading comprehension question
  • an open-ended question seeking the reader’s opinion or interpretation

Unit Study Activities

There are way too many activities for anyone to complete during this Unit Study.

The author suggests that you pick and choose what works for your family.

Activities include:

  • hands-on projects
  • audio and visual projects
  • arts & crafts
  • essay questions
  • creative writing

You Choose How to Use it

This book and Unit Study are both set up to be used in whichever way works for your family.

They have done the work of setting up the curriculum.

You just choose how to use it.

Whether you choose to use this book just as a read-aloud, or decide to use it as a full unit study, is up to you, but I am sure your family will enjoy it as much as we have in our homeschool.

My family chose to only do this book as a family read-aloud, but I am seriously considering going back and using the unit study.

Candy had been a good shopper for years. With 12 children, it didn’t take her long to realize that if she wasn’t a smart shopper, she wouldn’t make it very far! She wanted to continue to be a stay-at-home mother, but she wondered if this was going to be possible. Then, she found out about coupons. Coupons have literally changed her life!
