There is something about fall that makes me want to get back into the kitchen.
Soup simmering on the stove. Something baking in the oven. Warm meals around the table after a busy day.
But as much as I enjoy cooking, I don’t want dinner to become another source of stress.
With family, homeschooling, work, errands, and everything else that fills our days, I’ve learned that a few simple habits can make getting dinner on the table much easier.
Here are five things that help me.
1. Keep a Few Easy Meals in Your Rotation
You don’t have to come up with a brand-new dinner every night.
Choose a few meals your family enjoys and keep the ingredients on hand. When you know you have a busy day coming, you already have a plan.
For us, simple meals are often the ones everyone appreciates most.
And there is nothing wrong with repeating a family favorite!
2. Let Your Kitchen Tools Do Some of the Work
One of the easiest ways to make cooking less work is to use tools that actually save you time.
A good chopper can make quick work of vegetables. A pressure cooker can help get dinner on the table faster. A good baking pan can make homemade meals easier without creating a mountain of cleanup.
I love having kitchen tools that earn their space by being used regularly.
That’s one reason I enjoy Pampered Chef. I look for tools that make something I already do in my kitchen easier—not gadgets that are going to sit in a cabinet.
3. Prep a Little When You Have the Time
You don’t have to spend your entire weekend preparing food for the week.
Even a little preparation can help.
Wash and cut vegetables when you bring them home. Cook a little extra meat for another meal. Grate cheese while you’re already working in the kitchen.
Those small steps can make a busy evening much easier.
You don’t have to do everything ahead. Just look for little things you can do when you already have the kitchen out.
4. Make Enough for Leftovers
One of the easiest ways to make tomorrow’s dinner easier is to make a little extra tonight.
Leftovers can become tomorrow’s lunch, another dinner, or the starting point for something completely different.
And don’t overlook the money-saving benefit.
When you use the food you’ve already purchased instead of letting it go to waste, you’re getting more value from your grocery budget.
That’s a win in my book.
5. Don’t Make Dinner Harder Than It Needs to Be
This may be my favorite tip.
Dinner does not have to be complicated to be good.
Some nights you may have plenty of time to cook from scratch. Other nights, you may need something quick and simple.
That’s okay.
Use the ingredients you have. Use the kitchen tools that make your work easier. Make enough for another meal when it makes sense. And don’t feel like every dinner has to be a production.
The goal is to feed your family—not impress the internet.
Make Your Kitchen Work for You
I think we sometimes make cooking harder than it needs to be.
A little planning, a few dependable recipes, and the right tools can make a big difference.
And when I buy something for my kitchen, I want it to earn its place. I want to use it, enjoy it, and get plenty of value from it.
That’s true whether I’m buying groceries, kitchen equipment, or anything else for my family.
Because at the end of the day, I’m looking for ways to make what I already spend work harder for my family.
