Save Money on Groceries by Buying in Season - Not Just Produce!
You have heard it over and over. Buy in season to save money.
This almost always applies to fruits and vegetables.
The idea is to buy apples in September and pumpkins in October, etc.
I agree that this is a great way to save money on groceries.
But, it doesn’t just apply to produce.
This is a great time of year to pay attention to the sales cycles and buy in season.
Turkeys
If you haven’t already stocked your freezer with turkeys, then you have a couple of days left to take advantage of these sales.
This is the only time of year that you will find meat so cheap.
It is hard to beat 49 cents per pound for any kind of meat!
Turkeys can last in the freezer for a year or more.
I love to be able to pull a turkey out throughout the cold months of winter, but I also love to be the one who can bring a turkey to the 4th of July get-together!

Butter
This is the season to stock-up on butter!
Butter is marked down for the holidays.
I buy as much as I can afford and throw it into the freezer.
Butter freezes well and lasts a long time.
We won’t see another sale on butter until Easter time, but it won’t be as good or as long as it is now.

Flour
It’s baking season, so, of course, we will have flour sales.

Sugar
Sugar has been so expensive this year, so I am watching for deals on it during the baking season sales.

Vegetable Oil
This is the perfect season to stock up on vegetable oil, along with other types of oils.
Oils fall into the baking ingredients, and baking stuff will be on sale throughout this season.

Baking Chips
My family loves to bake. Almost everything is homemade and so delicious.
That is why we like to stock up on baking chips during this season.
Watch for sales on chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, and more.
Store them in the freezer, or seal them in a canning jar with a jar sealer to make them stay fresh longer.

Cake Mixes, Brownie Mixes, and More
The holiday season is the season to stock up on baking supplies.
There are all kinds of mixes on sale this time of year.
Watch for things, like:
- Cake Mixes
- Brownie Mixes
- Frostings
- Cheesecake Mixes
- Jell-O
- Pudding
- And so much more!

Soda
There will be a lot of soda sales throughout this season.
Many of us will be attending and/or throwing a lot of parties and get-togethers.
Now is the time to stock up on soda for those parties.

Cranberry Sauce and Fresh Cranberries
This is the season to buy canned cranberry sauce.
Some stores won’t even carry cranberries outside of this season.
I also stock up on fresh cranberries.
I just throw them into the freezer in the bags they come in until I am ready to use them throughout the year.
Here are a few things I like to do with my fresh cranberries:
- Homemade cranberry sauce
- Cranberry juice
- Craisins
- Cranberry cake
- Cranberry muffins
- Popcorn and cranberry strings for the Christmas tree
- And so much more!

Many stores will be marking down spices and herbs during this season.
