This Month’s Featured Small Business is Farr’s Greenhouse

Small town, local businesses are the backbone of this country.

It is family-owned businesses, like Farr’s Greenhouse that make living in the North Country such a joy.

In the Beginning

June Dow was the original owner of June’s Greenhouse just outside of Russell, New York.

June started the business way back in the early 1960s.

Patricia Farr went into partnership with June in 1977 and ended up buying the business outright in 1978.

Patricia is the mother of today’s current owner, Morgan Farr.

Morgan literally grew up in the greenhouse business. He would actually leave school early on spring days to rush home to help with the seemingly endless work that awaited in the greenhouse.

After Patricia closed the greenhouse in 1993, Morgan’s sister fondly remembered how much the local friends and family thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the greenhouse and just chatting.

Four years later, Morgan along with his wife, Sarah, opened up what we all love and know as Farr’s Greenhouse.

They are literally located just down the road from the spot where Morgan’s mother ran the family-owned business for years.

I love the fact that Morgan and Sarah raised the next generation in the greenhouse.

Don’t you just love the amazing stories behind generational, family-owned, small businesses?

You Always Feel Welcomed

I have never once shown up at Farr’s Greenhouse and felt unwelcome. I have gone there every spring for years on end, and it doesn’t matter if Morgan, Sarah, or one of their children is working the greenhouse that day, I am always welcomed with a smile and great conversation.

Isn’t that one of the best parts of visiting a small business?

You aren’t treated like just another customer to get through the line.

Everyone is welcomed like a long, lost friend.

What Does the Greenhouse Offer

 Honestly, there is almost too much to choose from at Farr’s Greenhouse, but it is always so much fun wandering around looking at all of the amazing plants.

My father always goes straight for the wave petunias and geraniums.

They offer a wide variety of bedding plants, vegetables, herbs, and hanging baskets.

This year, they are selling five varieties of seed potatoes and onion sets for the first time!

I am definitely grabbing some of those!
