A Great Way to Learn History

As many of my faithful readers know, my family thoroughly enjoys a good read-aloud. It is one of our favorite way to study history.

Studying history should be a thrilling adventure and and in itself!

Heroes of History: Douglas MacArthur

It is sad how so many people have seemingly forgotten our history, and our great heroes, like General Douglas MacArthur.

General MacArthur was born on January 26, 1880, and passed away on April 5, 1964.

He was an American five-star general. He became Field Marshal of the Philippine Army.

General MacArthur was the Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930’s.

He played a key role in the Pacific theater during World War II.

One of my favorite quotes of General Douglas MacArthur is as follows:

If the historian of the future should deem my service worthy of some slight reference, it would be my hope that he would mention me not as a commander engaged in campaigns and battles, even though victorious to American arms, but rather as one whose sacred duty it became, once the guns were silenced, to carry to the land of our vanquished foe the solace and hope and faith of Christian morals.

General Douglas MacArthur was not only well-loved, but he was a highly decorated, five-star general.

Imagine the surprise of the people at his funeral to find him clothed in his oldest and most worn suntan, everyday uniform. He was plainly dressed without any of the medals or ribbons that he had so bravely earned over his lifetime.

Before the general had died, he was quoted as saying:

I suppose, in a way, this everyday uniform has become part of my soul. It is a symbol of my life. Whatever I’ve done that really matters, I’ve done wearing it. When the time comes, it will be these that I journey forth in. What greater honor could come to an American and a soldier?

How My Family Used this Book

I bet you can guess how my family used this book!

Yup, we gathered into the living room, curled up in blankets on the couches, and listened it being read aloud.

This is one of my all-time favorite activities that my family has enjoyed for 30-something years!

It isn’t just the reading either. Read-alouds spark amazing discussion times!

We also used the printable, digital unit study along with the read-aloud biography.

The printable resources included everything you would need to round out this history course, like maps, timelines, and biography fact sheets.
