Christmas Gift Ideas for Grandparents and the Elderly

Christmas gift ideas for grandparents and the elderly can get quite tricky.

Our grandparents, and many of our parents, have seen a lot of Christmases.

They have received the typical Christmas gifts year after year.

For many of them, the thought of another holiday where they get more stuff to clutter up their homes and lives is downright depressing.

I am suggesting that this year, we consider giving gifts that will not add to their clutter, and will, in many cases, take the stress off from them throughout the upcoming new year.

Let’s make this holiday season simpler and more enjoyable for everyone involved, especially when it comes to giving Christmas gifts to our grandparents and the elderly in our lives.

Magazine Subscription

I remember, years ago, my mother-in-law’s sister bought her a subscription to Birds and Bloom magazine as a Christmas gift.

Each year, she would receive a different magazine subscription.

I thought that was such a wonderful idea!

Magazines are not as popular with today’s generation, but I bet the grandparents and elderly in your life would thoroughly enjoy getting a magazine subscription for Christmas this year.

A magazine subscription is a gift that keeps giving all year long.

This would make a really nice gift to donate to your local nursing home too.

Adult Coloring Books, Word Searches, Sudoku, and Crosswords

Adult coloring books, word searches, sudoku, and crossword puzzles make great gifts.

My mother-in-law always loved to keep her mind busy through these types of activities.

Consider buying a big stack of coloring and puzzle books to donate to your local nursing home this Christmas.

Puzzles and Games

Wintertime is long, but it can be even longer for our grandparents and other elderly family and friends.

Having activities to keep them busy throughout this season can be quite expensive.

I was shocked when I saw the price tag on puzzles!

Do your grandparents enjoy working on puzzles and games?

Buy some new ones for them this Christmas.

To make the gift even more special, schedule some time to work on the puzzles and play the games with them!

Nursing homes can always use new puzzles and games.

Stamps, Cards, and Envelopes

Although it may seem that the entire world is now living in a virtual world, many of the grandparents in our lives prefer to live in a nonvirtual world.

We are so used to paying our bills online today that we don’t stop and think that there’s a good chance that Grandma and Grandpa are still writing out checks and mailing their payments out every month.

My father likes to give his grandchildren and great-grandchildren cards throughout the year.

Our family is getting bigger all of the time.

Stamps, cards, and envelopes can end up costing quite a bit of money.

I used to find boxes of brand-new greeting cards at my local thrift store.

It is getting harder and harder to find them at the thrift store, but they are still affordable at the local Walmart and Dollar Tree.

One year, I created a bunch of cards online.

I put them into a box with envelopes and stamps, then gave them to my father as a Christmas gift.

Giving a book or two of stamps is a great Christmas gift for grandparents.

Stamps, cards, and envelopes would also make an amazing donation for your local nursing home.

Pay a Bill

Consider paying one of your elderly family member’s bills this year as a Christmas gift.

Do your grandparents love to have cable?

What about their trash bill, or phone bill?

Paying one of their bills would be the gift that keeps on giving throughout the year.

This is really an amazing gift that would take a lot of stress off from them.

Now, isn’t that a much better idea than just giving another knickknack for them to dust!?!

Grocery Card

A lot of times, our older family members don’t want to burden anyone down with things they are going through in life.

I find it a lot easier to give a grocery card as a gift rather than trying to ask them if they need help buying food that month.

It is a simple matter of saving their dignity.

Grocery cards make excellent Christmas gifts for grandparents and the elderly.

Hire a Personal Shopper

Maybe your grandparents could actually use some help getting groceries and other necessities from the store.

Many people are leery of going to too many places during this pandemic.

Consider hiring someone to help them out with their shopping.

There are a lot of ways to order groceries and get them delivered directly to their home today.

Amazon Prime offers a ton of groceries, and can oftentimes deliver within two days.

Walmart, also, has a lot of grocery options. You can choose to have groceries mailed within a few days, choose the Walmart pick-up, or delivery.

There is always the option of hiring a local friend, neighbor, or family member to do the shopping for your grandparents.

It could be as easy as helping them order through Instacart!

Restaurant Gift Card

Restaurant gift cards have always been a great Christmas gift choice.

Gift cards are available everywhere.

Sometimes I buy my gift cards at Price Chopper in order to earn back extra rewards.

I use online resources, like Amazon, Raise, and Restaurants.com.

But, my favorite way to gift restaurant gift cards is to find a local, small business and buy gift cards from them.

This may not fit into the pandemic world we are living in right now, but it is something to consider.

Gas Card

Do the grandparents in your life still drive?

The gift of not having to worry about paying for gasoline could be priceless for the elderly in our lives.

Who wouldn’t love a gas card as a Christmas gift!

Giving gas gift cards as a grandparent’s Christmas gift could give them one less thing to worry about for a while.

I love the idea of giving gifts that last way longer than Christmas morning.

Let’s consider giving Christmas gifts that will make the lives of the receiver less stressful.

Hire a Housekeeper

Hire a housekeeper to go in and do some cleaning.

Hire a local friend, neighbor, family member, or just a teenager from to down the road to go into your grandparent’s home and do some cleaning.

This can be a one-time gift or a gift that keeps giving.

This doesn’t have to be expensive either.

A couple of hours of cleaning a couple of times a month is probably more affordable than you think.

Choose how often, then make up a nice little coupon and let your grandparents know that you are giving them a personal housekeeper as a Christmas gift this year!

Hire a Lawn Care Helper

This is staying with the same idea as the housekeeper.

Consider hiring someone to help with lawn care.

This can include mowing grass, shoveling snow, or even helping with next year’s garden.

My children have always loved to make a little extra cash by keeping lawns mowed in the summer and snow shoveled in the wintertime.

Hiring some help is a great Christmas gift for your grandparents.

Greenhouse Gift Card

My dad loves to get a gift card from our local greenhouse as a gift.

He loves to buy his flowers every spring, but buying plants can get expensive fast!

Do your grandparents love gardening?

Consider giving a greenhouse gift card as a Christmas gift this year.

(For my local friends, Farr’s Greenhouse has gift cards available for Christmas 2021. Go here to contact Sarah and Morgan.)

Candy had been a good shopper for years. With 12 children, it didn’t take her long to realize that if she wasn’t a smart shopper, she wouldn’t make it very far! She wanted to continue to be a stay-at-home mother, but she wondered if this was going to be possible. Then, she found out about coupons. Coupons have literally changed her life!
