How to Build a Useful Stockpile Part 3

Learn to preserve food.

Preserving food is a great way to build a useful stockpile super fast.

I have read that we Americans throw away half of our food.

Think about that for a moment.

If you are a typical American and half of your food is getting thrown away, then you are literally throwing away money.

You can shave half off from your grocery bill simply by using the groceries you actual buy and bring home.

I use quite a few techniques when it comes to preserving food.

Freezing

Don’t forget to use your freezer.

Buy, buy, buy when you find things on sale, then throw them into the freezer.

That way, you can spend the next few weeks, or even longer eating food that you bought at a rock-bottom price.

I buy a lot of butter in November and December.

It all goes straight into my freezer.

No prep work needed.

I am able to use cheap butter throughout the year – no matter what the stores choose to charge later on.

I also put leftovers into the freezer.

I make a little extra spaghetti sauce, and throw the extra into the freezer for another day.

I take the leftover veggies and pop them into the freezer too.

Don’t throw everything into the refrigerator hoping you will use it up before it goes bad.

Use your freezer!

Canning

I love canning meat.

I can a lot of fruits, vegetables, jams, jellies, syrups, pie fillings, broths, and more, but canning meat is so easy.

Learn how to can raw beef over here.

Canning is a wonderful way to preserve food.

You can buy fresh food or grow it, then can it up.

You can also can up your leftovers.

Many times, I will throw things into the freezer until later, then pull it out, thaw it, and can it up.

I love to see my pantry filled with shelf-stable food that I know won’t go bad if the power happens to go out.
