I was happy to be given a free copy of Math Essentials‘ Math Refresher for Adults program in exchange for an honest review for the TOS homeschool review crew.
My family has spent a life time cultivating the love of learning. This love has followed each one of my children into adulthood.
Excuse me while I jump for joy right now!
Anyway, my family was excited to hear I was getting an adult refresher math course, and they had a little debate over who was going to be the winner of becoming the student!
While a couple of the boys were loudly debating the issue, Judy snatched up the workbook and began working.
We have a winner! Judy won!
(This is a consumable workbook, which is meant for only one student.)
Math Essentials – Math Refresher for Adults
Every lesson within the Math Refresher for Adults workbook has a corresponding online video lesson.
The basics of general math, geometry, problem solving, pre-algebra, and algebra are all covered within this course
The very basic things are covered, like simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Concepts that I have seen many children and adults alike struggle with, like fractions, percentages, decimals, and integers are also covered.
The Math Refresher for Adults teaches things that everyone needs to know in order to operate in everyday life, like charts and graphs and word problems.
Finally, the concepts of pre-algebra and algebra are taught.
The Math Refresher for Adults course includes both a physical workbook and an online course.
Support for Students and Teachers
A Few Tips for Using the Math Workbook
The front of the workbook has a page dedicated to supplying you with helpful tips on how to actually use the workbook.
This section includes tips on how to use this workbook to help ensure your success in math.
Tips include things like, how to properly use the Table of Contents, Review exercises, and a reminder of how important accuracy is when dealing with mathematics.
It explains how copying the problems out helps with retaining the information, and encourages you to have the person working on these math problems limit the time to an hour, or so per day.
I personally am a firm believer in the power of both copy work and the “a little dab will do ya” concepts!
Special Tips for Parents to Help Their Kids
This book can also be used as a remedial math book for kids. There is a page in front of the workbook dedicated for parents can help their kids.
Parents are encouraged to maintain a positive attitude towards math themselves.
Make math fun by incorporating jokes, games, riddles, brainteasers, and so on.
The Back of the Workbook
The back of the workbook includes a complete solutions/answer guide.
Although the author of this workbook chose to call this the Solutions Section, it doesn’t actually show how the problems are worked out. It just gives the answers to each problem.
A glossary is also included in the back of the book.
Video Teacher
It is said that anybody can learn as long as they have the right teacher.
I am the type of learner that needs both visual and hands-on lessons to help me to learn.
