Taco night with homemade taco seasoning and pantry staples

There are some meals I can put on the table without thinking too hard about them.

Tacos are one of those meals.

They don’t have to be fancy. They don’t have to take a lot of time. And best of all, I can make them with what I already have in the kitchen.

After feeding a big family, I’ve learned that knowing how to make a meal from what you have is just as important as knowing what to put on your grocery list.

That’s a big part of what I mean when I talk about Strategic Shopping.

It’s not about always buying the cheapest thing.

It’s about being intentional with what you buy, finding ways to use it, and making those groceries work harder for your family.

And taco night is a great place to start.

Start With What You Already Have

Before I add something to my grocery list, I like to look around my kitchen first.

What’s in the pantry?

What’s in the refrigerator?

What’s in the freezer?

You might be surprised by how often the answer to “What’s for dinner?” is already sitting there.

Maybe you have some ground beef.

Maybe there’s leftover chicken from yesterday.

Maybe you’ve got beans, tortillas, rice, corn, cheese, salsa, or a few vegetables that need to be used.

That doesn’t mean you have to follow a recipe exactly.

Start with what you have and build from there.

That’s Strategic Shopping in real life.

You Don’t Need to Buy a Taco Seasoning Packet

Here’s one of those little changes that can make your pantry work harder.

If tacos are something your family enjoys, you don’t have to buy a seasoning packet every time you make them.

Make your own!

I like having a jar of homemade taco seasoning in my pantry because it’s ready whenever I need it.

And making a batch means I’m not starting from scratch every taco night.

You can find my simple recipe here:

Homemade Taco Seasoning: Make a Jarful for Your Pantry

It’s one of those little pantry projects that doesn’t take much effort but can be useful again and again.

That’s the kind of thing I like to keep around.

Tacos Don’t Have to Start With Ground Beef

This is where I really like taco night.

You have options.

Have leftover chicken?

Shred it, season it, and turn it into tacos.

Have beans?

Use them on their own or add them to your taco meat.

Have leftover rice?

Make taco bowls.

Have vegetables that need to be used?

Season them and add them to the meal.

Have just a little bit of meat left?

Add beans, rice, or another filling ingredient and stretch it into something that will feed more people.

You don’t have to have a perfect list of ingredients.

Sometimes you just have to look at what needs to be used and get creative.

And after all these years of cooking for a big family, I’ve learned that some of the best meals come from “Let’s see what we’ve got.”

Think Beyond the Taco

One of my favorite things about taco night is that the leftovers don’t have to look like leftovers.

That taco meat can become:

  • Taco salad
  • Quesadillas
  • Burritos
  • Nachos
  • Taco bowls
  • Rice and beans with taco meat
  • A quick lunch the next day

That’s a pretty good return from one meal.

You’re not just making dinner. You’re creating possibilities for the next meal, too.

And that’s important when you’re trying to make the most of the groceries you buy.

I don’t want to buy food, use half of it, and then discover it hiding in the back of the refrigerator a week later.

I want to use it.

I want my groceries to earn their place in my cart.

Keep Flexible Foods in Your Pantry

I don’t think your pantry needs to be packed with every ingredient for every recipe you might ever make.

I’d much rather have a few basic foods that can be used in lots of different ways.

For taco night, that might mean having some of these on hand:

  • Tortillas
  • Rice
  • Beans
  • Corn
  • Salsa
  • Canned tomatoes
  • Cheese
  • Onions
  • Basic seasonings
  • Homemade taco seasoning

And you don’t need all of them every time.

That’s the beauty of having flexible ingredients.

One ingredient can become part of several different meals.

That’s what I want from my pantry.

Not shelves full of food that I don’t know what to do with.

I want food that gives me options.

A Little Planning Can Keep Food From Going to Waste

I know how easy it is to think every dinner needs to be completely different.

It doesn’t.

If I buy tortillas, I want to think about more than one meal I can make with them.

If I cook chicken, I want to think about what I can do with the leftovers.

If I open a can of beans, I want to have an idea for using them instead of letting them sit in the refrigerator until I forget about them.

That little bit of thinking before I shop can make a big difference.

I’m not trying to make grocery shopping harder.

I’m trying to make it easier.

Shop Your Kitchen Before You Shop the Store

So the next time you’re getting ready to make your grocery list, try something simple.

Shop your own kitchen first.

Look through the pantry.

Check the refrigerator.

Take a peek in the freezer.

Then ask yourself:

“What can I make with what I already have?”

You may be surprised at what you find.

Maybe taco night is already hiding in your kitchen.

Maybe you have enough ingredients to make something completely different.

Either way, you’re starting in the right place.

Before you spend another dollar, use what you already bought.

Make that taco seasoning.

Use those leftovers.

Stretch that little bit of meat.

Put those tortillas to work.

Find another use for that can of beans.

These may seem like small things, but small things are often what make a grocery budget work better.

That’s what Strategic Shopping means to me.

It’s not about making life complicated.

It’s about making the food you buy work harder for your family.
