Farmhouse Decor on the Cheap
I love the farmhouse look! One of my 2021 goals is to fill my home up with some more farmhouse decor on the cheap.
It must be the country girl in me, but I absolutely love the farmhouse look.
Although I do have a lot of farmhouse decor already, I am always on the lookout for more.
Tree Trunk Butcher Block
One of my favorite farmhouse items is my huge tree trunk butcher block that used to be the centerpiece of my mother’s kitchen.
She gave it to me years ago.
Ma said my farmhouse needed a butcher block, and boy, was she right.
Not only is it extremely useful, but it adds a sentimental item that always reminds me of my mother.
Plus, it makes perfect farmhouse decor.
It didn’t cost me anything but it means everything to me.
Everything Wooden in the Kitchen
If it is wooden, it just naturally has that farmhouse look to me.
I love my collection of cutting boards, wooden bowls, wooden spoons, and wooden rolling pins.
A couple of my favorite cutting boards were made by a dear friend of mine.
Do you have any crafty friends?
Cast Iron Pans
Cast iron pans cook up some amazing food, but they also make perfect farmhouse decor!
I inherited some of my cast iron from my mother. I purchased some of it on the clearance rack from the Walmart camping section. And, I had a few friends give some to me.
No matter how I acquired my cast iron, I have loved it all.
It is not hard to take care of your cast iron pans. Rub them with oil inside and out, then put them upside down on another pan in the oven. Cook the pan slowly in the oven. This will condition your pans beautifully. I have also just rubbed oil on the inside of the pan, then cooked it on top of the stove until it started to smoke, and it turned out perfectly.
Old-fashioned Wood Cookstove
Another one of my favorite farmhouse looks is my old-fashioned wood cookstove.
I cooked exclusively with wood for years on my mother’s cookstove.
That stove was passed on to my brother, but I still enjoy a newer one.
I picked it up for a great price on Craigslist. There are a lot of cookstoves for sale on Craigslist and Facebook Market Place right now.
If you have been wanting one, now is the time to get one! Let me know if you find a great deal!
Have you ever cooked with wood?
Do you own a cookstove?
Have you ever known anyone who owned a cookstove?
Leave your answers in the comments. I would love to hear from you!
Woodstove
Every farmhouse needs a woodstove.
I have two on my homestead!
I have my trusty old wood cookstove, but I also have a regular woodstove too.
I picked the woodstove I have now up this past spring at 90% off retail price on Facebook Market Place from an elderly couple who purchased it brand new but thought it gave too much heat. SCORE!
Distressed Cupboards
I really enjoy my distressed looking cupboard. It used to belong to my mother-in-law, and her mother before that, so it is naturally distressed.
If you don’t have an old cupboard, you can create a distressed look yourself.
Look up how to do it on Pinterest, or just cover it with distressed-looking wood grain wallpaper.
Jars, Jars, Jars
I love jars! They are so versatile. I use them for practically everything!
I have Mason jars filled with all kinds of food that I have canned over the past few years, including meat, potatoes, applesauce, stewed tomatoes, peaches, pears, pineapple, and more.
My pantry is filled with a lot of jars of dehydrated food too, like assorted teas, herbs, vegetables, meat, berries, and fruits.
I have jars of fermented food on top of my refrigerator, like gallons of kombucha and saurkraut.
I store left-over food in jars in the fridge.
I keep a jar of yeast in my freezer.
My dish detergent is dumped into a pretty green jar and stored on the sink.
Do you get the point?
I like jars!
Do you use jars in your farmhouse decor?
Old-fashioned Crocks
If you try to talk to anyone about crocks today, they automatically think you are referring to shoes!
My mother gave me some old-fashioned crocks years ago.
I love them!
Every farmhouse needs a few crocks.
I don’t actually use them in the way they were used years ago. I do all of my fermenting in Mason jars.
I do, however, have a beautiful crock sitting beside my oven. I keep it filled with all of my wooden spoons.
It is just beautiful.
Clawfoot Bathtub
If you love taking baths, then you would fall in love with my old-fashioned claw foot bathtub that I have had for years.
This tub came with the house that I used to live in.
The house belonged to my great-grandparents.
The tub is one of the only things I brought with me when we moved off from our 100-acre farm to this new house.
It definitely needs some love in the form of a good sanding and paint job, but I absolutely love it anyway!
Restoring my clawfoot bathtub is on my list of things to do, but until then, I will still be enjoying my baths.
Washboards
I got two old-fashioned washboards from my mother. I remember seeing them hanging in her bathroom.
Now, one of them hangs in my bathroom, and the other one hangs at my sister’s house.
A couple of my kids thought they would give them a try the last time our power went out.
I think they agree that these washboards work better as farmhouse decor. Ha!
Old Washtubs
I have used washtubs in my farmhouse decor for years. I have used them as laundry baskets, toy boxes, and garden pots.
Both my children and grandchildren have loved just playing inside of them over the years.
They made perfect little swimming pools for my babies and toddlers.
They are both beautiful and useful to have on the homestead.
Milk Cans
My parents have collected old milk cans for years.
My mother passed a couple onto me, and my father still has a lot of them.
Dad has a long line of milk cans along his front yard fence. He places containers of flowers in them every spring.
I have used mine in the same way, but I have also used them inside the house.
My children have always loved to use them as a regular stool to sit on.
Do you use milk cans in your farmhouse decor?
Do you know the original use of milk cans?
Leave the answer in the comments.
Wooden Signs and Farmhouse Decor
I love simple things, and these wooden signs make the perfect simplified farmhouse decor.
I am blessed enough to have a lot of talented friends and family, so my home is filled with some awesome signs and wooden farmhouse decor.
I think the wooden shelves dispersed about my home make great farmhouse decor too.
Homemade wooden signs make excellent farmhouse decor.
Picture Frames
Picture frames are a quick and easy way to add farmhouse decor to a home.
I want to turn an entire wall into my grandchildren’s wall. I would love to use these rustic looking picture frames on my grandchildren’s wall.
I also want to frame some of my homemade remedy recipes and use them as decor in the bathroom.
That way, the kids will have a copy of Mama’s remedies to reference over the years, and they will be easily accessible.
Lamps and Lights
I found a beautiful Tiffany-like light at a local thrift store for twenty bucks!
I also found a little lamp that looks like an old-fashioned oil lamp at the same thrift shop for around five dollars.
Lamps and pretty lights make a house feely so homey to me.
Lanterns
It might be because I lived off-grid for years, but I love to have lanterns in the house.
I have a variety of both oil lamps and battery-operated lamps.
I have store-bought lanterns and homemade oil lamps.
They look nice spread out around the house and really add to the farmhouse decor.
Window Shades as Farmhouse Decor
I am shocked that these wooden window shades have lasted at my house for over a decade!
My mega family tends to destroy things quickly, but these wooden blinds have stood the test of time.
I love these window blinds, so I am glad they survived the Foote crew!
I got them for free at a church sale years ago.
Throw Pillows
With twelve children, I was never able to keep throw pillows on the couch!
Now that most of them are grown and have families of their own, I thought I would give it a try.
Throw pillows are a simple and frugal way to add farmhouse decor to any room.
Blankets
It doesn’t really matter what kind of blanket it is, blankets give a comforting look to any room.
I love my homemade crocheted blankets.
I have a beautiful handmade quilt that hangs on my living room wall. It is absolutely gorgeous, plus it has a lot of sentimental value to it.
My aunt had made many, many quilts over the years. This was the last quilt she worked on before she passed on.
Her good friend finished it for her, and gave it to me!
It is more than precious!
It doesn’t have to be a crocheted blanket or even a handmade quilt to get that farmhouse look though.
Even a nice fuzzy throw blanket can do the trick.
Baskets
Baskets are another quick and frugal way to add farmhouse decor to your home.
I literally have used baskets for everything.
My bathroom towels are kept in baskets.
Extra toilet paper and paper towels are kept in large baskets on a top bathroom shelf.
I always loved having fruit baskets to set on the table.
I store potatoes and onions in baskets.
I need a new basket to collect eggs with!
Flooring
I have a variety of flooring throughout my home.
The upstairs still has its original hardwood floors.
Downstairs has stone-like vinyl on the main floors, plus real stone flooring around my woodstoves.
My living room has a beautiful oriental-type rug in the middle of the floor that really goes well with my dark brown tongue and groove board wall.
I saved money towards buying my flooring, plus I used gift cards to Lowes that I earned through rebate apps, like Ibotta, Fetch Rewards, and Swagbucks.
Please consider using my referral links when you sign up. It won’t change your account at all, but it will give me a small reward for sending you their way.
I have literally earned hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards through Swagbucks over the years.
Ibotta makes it pretty easy to earn money fast by purchasing things you already planned on buying anyway!
My Ibotta referral code is: moxsrwj
Fetch Rewards is by far my favorite digital rebate app!
They make it super easy to earn cash back! There are no hoops to jump through!
My referral code is: Q8EQF
Pallets
Farmhouse decor just has to include pallets!
I use pallets for a lot of different things.
I have made fences from them. I have a pathway made out of them. My garden has raised beds made out of pallets.
I even had an harbor made at of pallets one time.
I love to see wooden pallet decor on the walls.
They also make perfect kindling wood for my woodstoves.
Do you use pallets on your homestead?
I have never paid for my pallets.
I find them for free beside the road all of the time.
Many stores have stacks of them for free.
My sister-in-law is always bringing me free pallets from the nursing home she works at.

I love the farmhouse look!! I’ve been doing that here a little at a time. My favorite so far is old canning jars filled with buttons or marbles.
